  5. The purpose of this document is to explain the use of the program 
  6. DVHERC.COM.  This is a program provided with DESQview that clears up 
  7. video problems that some users with Hercules monochrome graphics cards 
  8. may have.
  9.  
  10. How do I cure my weird Hercules video problems inside of DESQview?
  11.  
  12.      If you have a Hercules monochrome graphics card (or compatible) you 
  13. may have video problems when you run in DESQview.  The user may solve 
  14. these problems by loading the program DVHERC.COM before entering 
  15. DESQview. When the video problems occur, tap "ctrl-alt-1" (or "ctrl-alt-
  16. 2", or "ctrl-alt-3", or "ctrl-alt-4", whichever works) to cure the 
  17. problem.

  19. What problems does DVHERC cure?
  20.  
  21. DVHERC may address your problem if
  22.  
  23. --you are getting the wrong screen, such as when you use the
  24. "preview" feature that many word processors offer, which allows you to
  25. view the document as it will look when printed out;
  26.  
  27. --you are getting inappropriate blinking or high-intensity
  28. attributes;
  29.  
  30. --the screen comes out blank or garbled.
  31.  
  32. What problems does DVHERC not cure?
  33.  
  34.      The DESQview screen blanker fails to blank the top row of dots on 
  35. Hercules monitors.  DVHERC does not fix this.
  36.      RAMFONT (a feature of the Hercules Monographics Plus and Hercules 
  37. Incolor video cards) is not supported in DESQview.  DVHERC does not 
  38. help.  See the technote "HRAMFONT.TEC" for some suggestions on what to 
  39. do.

  41. What is going on?
  42.  
  43. Hercules video has a text page and two graphics pages.  There is no
  44. completely reliable way to determine which one is current.  On real
  45. Hercules cards it is possible to determine which page is current by
  46. reading the state of the light pen port.  On a Hercules clone without
  47. light pen support DVHERC is necessary to display graphics without
  48. video problems.  On Hercules cards with light pen support the
  49. correct page will occasionally not be restored.  In DESQview if a
  50. program is using more than one of these pages then the wrong one may
  51. be restored.  DESQview may also get the blinking attribute wrong with
  52. some hardware/software.
  53.  
  54. What does DVHERC do?
  55.  
  56.      DVHERC gives the user the ability to choose which page is used.  
  57. If DVHERC is loaded when the user presses "ctrl-alt-1" the text page is 
  58. displayed.  If the user presses "ctrl-alt-2" the first graphics page is 
  59. displayed.  If the user presses "ctrl-alt-3" then the second graphics 
  60. page is displayed.  If the user presses "ctrl-alt-4" then the "blinking 
  61. enable" bit is toggled between blinking and high-intensity background.  
  62.      The "ctrl-alt-4" function, the toggling of the blink enable bit, of 
  63. DVHERC works on CGA monitors as well.
  64.  
  65.      Examples
  66.  
  67.      Say you have used the "preview" function of your word processor.  
  68. This causes a graphics page to be used.  If you cannot return to the 
  69. program's text screen then "ctrl-alt-1" will force the text page to be 
  70. restored.  
  71.      If the preview screen comes up blank or garbled then perhaps the 
  72. wrong graphics page has been displayed.  Pressing "ctrl-alt-2" will 
  73. display the first graphics page and pressing "ctrl-alt-3" will display 
  74. the second graphics page.
  75.      If the blinking attribute is coming up when it should not (or not 
  76. coming up when it should) then pressing "ctrl-alt-4" will toggle 
  77. (switch) how this attribute bit is set and cure this problem.  This 
  78. feature of DVHERC works with CGA monitors as well.

  80. NOTE

  82.      All of the actions of DVHERC are completely reversible.  Pressing 
  83. "ctrl-alt-4" twice returns you to where you were to begin with.  
  84. Pressing "ctrl-alt-1" always displays the text page, pressing "ctrl-alt-
  85. 2" always displays the first graphics page, pressing "ctrl-alt-3" always 
  86. displays the second graphics page.  You can look upon ctrl-alt-1,2,3 as 
  87. a toggle between three different options; choosing one does not preempt
  88. you from using the other.

  90. LIGHT PEN 
  91.  
  92. If your Hercules card has light pen support (and all these cards made by 
  93. the Hercules company do) theoretically DESQview will not need DVHERC.  
  94. It does not hurt to try DVHERC for graphics problems anyway.

  96. SUMMARY

  98.      Most people who are using Hercules have no problems.  Those who do 
  99. should load DVHERC.COM before entering DESQview and, when their video 
  100. problems happen, try "ctrl-alt-1" or "ctrl-alt-2" or "ctrl-alt-3" or 
  101. "ctrl-alt-4."
